Our knowledge and understanding about our brain is evolving at a fast pace, establishing a clearer relation among why we do, what we do and how.

One of the key ability of the brain is Neuroplasticity, to form and reorganize synaptic connections, especially in response to learning or experience or following injury. For example – while learning to drive a car, the brain reinforces synaptic connections that send signals to our hands, feet and eyes to help us drive more effectively i.e. we learn driving better.

Neuroplasticity is also known as brain plasticity or neural plasticity, describes lasting change to the brain throughout an individual’s life course. Learning new concepts, participating in new activities, and having new experiences are changing who we are, atleast in our synaptic connections. And guess what, age is just a number.

The term gained prominence in the latter half of the 20th century, when new research showed that many aspects of the brain can be altered (or are “plastic”) even into adulthood.

In a classic research-based TEDx Talk, Dr. Lara Boyd describes how Neuroplasticity gives you the power to shape the brain we want.

Dr. Lara Boyd was recruited by the University of British Columbia in 2006, to become the Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology and Motor Learning. She has established the Brain Behaviour Lab, recruited and trained over 40 graduate students, published more than 80 papers and been awarded over $5 million in funding.

Her efforts are leading to the development of novel, and more effective, therapeutics for individuals with brain damage and also have applications in optimising day-to-day work and life.
