3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. It all starts with making a virtual design of the object you want to create. This virtual design is made in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file using a 3D modeling program (for the creation of a totally new object) or with the use of a 3D scanner (to copy an existing object).
With this technology getting popular by the day, new use cases are coming up as well, and the scope appears to be growing. Operating and scaling in this space is Delhi based Shaperjet.
What is Shaperjet?
ShaperJet makes simple and functional desktop 3D Printers. The printer prints in PLA, which is a corn based biodegradable plastic. Other plastics are not used, because the fumes from them are hazardous to health. It was founded in December 2015 by Raman Sachdev. Sachdev holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is an expert in Additive Manufacturing and Prototyping technologies.
Apart from the hardware, Shaperjet offers training programs for students of schools and colleges. Shaperjet is trying to equip every student with a 3D Printer. Its clients include schools, maker spaces, small Businesses, Architects, Sculptors, Animation Studios, Product Development Companies and Individuals, Robotics, Customized Products Manufacturers among others.
Response Till Date
This company has sold 63 3D printers in last 5 months. The company is concentrating mostly on learning, education and hobbyist verticals and are keen to set up a 3d printing lab in every institution.Currently they have 2 models ShaperJet SJB and ShaperJet SJL, priced at Rs. 48,000/- and Rs.55,000/- respectively.
They also plan to launch another model which has a bigger build volume; They call it ShaperJet+ (price to be disclosed later). One can go buy Shaperjet product from online eCommerce platforms and resellers in various cities.
Shaperjet is a Desktop 3D Printer, that can be used by kids, schools, colleges, small enterprises and personal use. The company’s long term plans are to diversify into medical, engineering, architecture, fashion and other industries as well. In the future they look forward to be in everyone’s reach, have a credible reseller network in every city and also add features like an onboard camera for remote access, WiFi and so on.
The company is bootstrapped at present. According to a study by 6Wresearch— “India 3D Printer Market (2015-2021)” 3D Printer Market is projected to record $79 Million by 2021. A few reasons behind the slow growth till now could be low awareness about the technology and high capital investment in equipment manufacturing, that deter more people to venture into this space. However now with the growing awareness of applications of this technology across sectors & support from Make In India initiative, more entrepreneurs might jump into this field.
