Now local calls from Skype, Whatsapp and Viber may no longer be free. A high level government committee on Net Neutrality proposed that the calls through internet-based services like WhatsApp, Viber and Skype should also follow the same regulations followed by other service providers.
However, with this new proposal the messaging and international calls will remain free as usual, as reported by TOI.
Another suggestion by the committee was that the zero-rating platforms be treated on a case-by-case basis and clearance sought from telecom regulator Trai, as this will open the possibility of discrimination in favour of established internet application providers.
As the report says, “The committee unhesitatingly recommends that the core principles of net neutrality must be adhered to.” Further adding it said, “Clearly, the debate on Net Neutrality is multi-dimensional and solution to this cannot therefore be uni-dimensional.”
