Google’s recent acquisition of Agawi, a California-based technology startup was founded by three persons of Indian origin, namely, Peter Relan, Rajat Gupta and Rohan Relan. iamWire gets you life stories of these talented founders who are set to power Google’s new initiative.
Peter came to the US to study Computer Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles. He started his career working at a startup as a software developer of networking protocols. Soon after that he joined an Arpanet research group led by Carl Sunshine, and became a research engineer on network protocols and published a paper in 1987. He took his research work and joined HP in 1988 as an architect of the Openview Platform at HP. During his tenure at HP, he attended Stanford University and did his MS in 1992.
Peter is a Silicon Valley technology veteran with over twenty-five years of experience in technology, executive management and serial entrepreneurship. He holds a mix of elaborate and unique set of experiences as he has been an active part of many big companies and startups.
He has founded three companies namely YouWeb, CrowdStar, Agawi Inc and is a Chief Mentor at 9+ Program. For the past 10 years, Peter has been an active angel investor and advisor for startups.
Apart from being an entrepreneur, Peter also holds an elaborate interest in extracurricular activities as well as social causes. He is an avid tennis player, children’s basketball coach, and percussionist in Indian Classical Music. He supports Ekal, a network of 30,000 rural literacy schools in India, and also serves as a Board Member at the Tech Museum of innovation in San Jose and on the Annual Humanitarian Award committee. He is also incubating a company called SmartCloud Infotech, which is responsible for a women’s safety app in India.
Rajat Gupta has an extensive academic background. He has done his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, MS in Computer Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
He, along with Peter founded Agawi (formerly known as iSwifter Inc.). He is also an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at YouWeb and previously has worked in Product Management and Marketing at Symantec. He is passionate about emerging technologies and business models in the mobile and consumer internet space.
Rohan holds a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley and has done his MS in Management Science & Engineering from Stanford University.
His interests are in cloud computing, low cost computing devices and bioinformatics. Previously, he served as a Quant at Goldman Sachs in New York for 6 months.
In 2011, he Co-founded Pluto Games and later Co-founded Agawi with Peter and Rajat. Currently, he works as a Software Engineer with Google.
The recent acquisition of Agawi does not reveal Google’s future plans, nor has the company commented on it. Google shares an age old relationship with Indians. Some of the top Google executives are of Indian origin who have brought about phenomenal changes and have also been the mastermind behind most of Google’s successful innovations.
