#PlayingItMyWayLaunch: The Story, the Controversy and the Tweets

Sachin Book

On Wednesday night, Indian sportsman Sachin Tendulkar launched his autobiography: Playing It My Way in the presence of his former teammates, celebrities and family members at an engrossing ceremony in Mumbai.

The book has already created lot of buzz with Little Master’s scathing attack on former Indian coach Greg Chappell.

He shared on his Twitter profile “I gave the first copy of my book to my mother; the look of pride on her face was a priceless moment”.

There were always rumors that the batting legend would pen his thoughts post retirement but the official announcement came on 2nd of September, 2014.

Ecstatic on the book launch, Tendulkar calls his autobiography his second innings. The star-studded evening was hosted by renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle. Famous sports journalist and cricket histiorian, Boria Majumdar shares writing credits for the book.

“It took me three years to write this book. I want people to know how my life has been,” Sachin said in a message telecast on Star Sports.

The Controversy:

Touted as the Bible of Cricket, the book has been in the news off-lately because of some candid revelations from the master himself about the former Indian coach, Greg Chappel. He said “Just months before the World Cup, Chappell had come to see me at home and, to my dismay, suggested that I should take over the captaincy from Rahul Dravid. Anjali, who was sitting with me, was equally shocked to hear him say that ‘together, we could control Indian cricket for years,’ and that he would help me in taking over the reins of the side.”

Backing Sachin’s claims, former Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly and cricketer V.V.S Laxman said they completely believe in Sachin and his words because he’s always been the man of great integrity and honesty.

Tendulkar is scathing in his criticism of Chappell, describing him as a “ringmaster who imposed his ideas on the players without showing any signs of being concerned about whether they felt comfortable or not”.

Zaheer and Harbhajan also supported Tendulkar’s version of the events, stating that they too had been victims of Chappell’s dictatorial style of functioning.

Interestingly, Chappell rubbished the claims and said he enjoyed a pleasant afternoon at Tendulkar’s home and the captaincy issue never came up for discussion.

The Big shots who attended the ceremony:

The grand function was a star-studded affair and Sachin Tendulkar, the man of the hour along with Boria Majumdar – is in already and welcoming the guests. Rajiv Shukla, senior BCCI official, was one amongst the first to arrive, much before the event started.

Sachin Tendulkar’s first coach, Ramakant Achrekar, was escorted by well-wishers and made his presence felt.

Famous cricketers who made to the function were Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly, Zaheer, Harbhajan, VVS Laxman and in the presence of some celebrities and family members.
