Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates has made a personal investment in impact investment fund, Unitus Seed with participation from VC investor Vinod Khosla and a group of Seattle-area techies. Unitus invests in India through two funds- Unitus Seed Fund India (a Sebi-registered VC Fund) and Unitus Seed Fund LP (an offshore VC Fund). This investment has been in offshore venture capital fund.
As per ET report, the exact amount of Gates’ investment in Unitus is still undisclosed. “Impact investing is a powerful model with the potential to build markets and drive change for the people who need it most,” said Gates.
Unitus Seed Fund, a financial service group, majorly invests in BoP startups and in multiple emerging markets. It is part of the Unitus Group and has offices in Bangalore and Seattle. Last week, it had invested in Bangalore-based Blowhorn, an online marketplace for last mile logistics, with participation from with participation from Tim Draper, founder & managing partner of Draper Associates.
It had also invested in Bangalore-based start-up Jiffstore, which offers mobile commerce and customer engagement solutions to retailers and mGaadi, a m-commerce solution for ordering auto rickshaws.
Currently, its portfolio includes 14 companies in which it had made investment and now present in 8 cities in India.
