Government Requests for User Data Increased by 24 percent: Facebook


Social networking company, Facebook has released a report for users to bring a transparency in which country Government is looking into its citizens social activities. According to that, the Governments requests for user information is increased by 24 percent in the first half of this year over the last half of 2013.


As shown in the above image, in the first half of this year, Indian Government alone had made 4559 requests, out of which around 50% of the requests were fulfilled by Facebook.

In the first six months of 2014, governments around the world made 34,946 requests for data as against 25,000 in January-June 2013, and 28147 in July-December 2013.

We’re aggressively pursuing an appeal to a higher court to invalidate these sweeping warrants and to force the government to return the data it has seized,” the company wrote in a Blog Post on Tuesday.

One can attribute the rise in Goverment investigation on rising cyber crimes globally. Even with multiple steps taken to secure users, nothing is ever fool-proof. Online Stalking, Hate-Crimes etc. are a common thing, however even for the real world crimes, information on one’s social accounts can provide a number of key points about both the victim and the perpetrator.
