American cable and satellite television network, HBO has announced that in 2015, the company will offer a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO streaming service in US.
“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them,” said Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO, HBO.
This means, Netflix and Hulu will need to stiffen up. If mainstream channels start coming online, then cable network providers will lose their grounds as well.
As per NDTV Gadgets report, The streaming service is expected to offer hit shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Girls” without cable subscription including video services similar to Netflix, Amazon or Hulu. Currently, consumers can access HBO online via HBO Go service by using cable or satellite.
