In a report by Economic Times, China’s telecom equipment maker, ZTE corporation is expected to launch six new smartphones this year. The phones will be 3G and 4G enabled, to cater to different segments of the market at a price range between INR 7000-INR 18000. Also, the firm is planning to open a handset R&D centre in India for fuelling its handset business’ growth.
This year, the firm wants to increase its marketing and branding expenditure along with smartphone launches. The company is looking for five regional distributors for its handset business and plans to team up with online retailers such as Amazon, eBay and Flipkart to sell its premium devices.

Times of India says: The handset maker is also in talks with global chipset suppliers such as MediaTek, Marvell and Qualcomm to bring in affordable 4G phones in the country since it realises that “affordability” will drive 4G growth. It is also likely to bring to India its popular V5 budget 4G handset, which is currently selling in China for about $130 (Rs 7,700), said Zeng, executive VP and worldwide head of ZTE’s handsets business.
In a clear bid to boost sales of handsets across the GSM, CDMA and 4G-LTE platforms, ZTE’s India unit will double its marketing and brand building budgets in 2014-15, said Lv Qian Haw, head of devices strategy at ZTE Corp, who was also present at the event.
SoftPedia says: Apparently, ZTE will focus mainly on 4G connectivity with the new handsets, as the technology is just picking up pace in the country, and it wants to monetize on that.
The mobile phone maker is already in talks with various wireless carriers in the country for the release of said devices on their 4G networks. However, no specific details on the matter have been provided as of now.
Furthermore, the company says that it is very optimistic when it comes to the success of 4G LTE in India, and that it will provide users with a series of affordable compatible devices to enjoy the technology.
“ZTE is particularly gung-ho about the business potential of 4GLTE deployments in India and we will shortly finalize specific 4G models that will be launched,” Zeng adds.
According to the news site, ZTE will work with various chip makers out there for the release of its 4G smartphones at affordable price tags, given that cheap phones are usually more sought for in India.
Fonearena says: ”ZTE sees huge potential of handset business growth in India and is thinking long-term in terms of dedicated handset R&D centre for India,” Zeng said in a PTI report. The company which has 18 R&D centres across China, US and Europe, spends 10 per cent of its revenue from handsets on R&D.

Zeng was speaking to ET on the sidelines of the ZTE global analyst conference in Shanghai. The company, China’s secondlargest telecom gear maker, will deploy a hybrid marketing strategy involving partner operators and independent channel partners to sell its new mobile phones.
