This news validates previous rumors that were circulating for months. In October, Russian tech blogger Eldar Murtazin had mentioned in a tweet that Samsung would release its own Google Glass competitor.
There are many speculations on the design of Gear Glass. Some reports suggest a Google Glass-like design and some suggest a combination of an ear piece and display, enabling people to listen to music with the right ear while looking at the display with the right eye.
Business Korea quotes a Samsung associate, who told the publication that the wearable will be powered by Samsung’s homegrown and next generation of Tizen OS. Tizen also runs all of Samsung’s Gear line of wearable wrist-borne devices, after it switched over from using Android on the original Galaxy Gear smartwatch released last year. Tizen scores in terms of power consumption that reduces charging time.
Sony and Epson are reported to have been going ahead with their own versions, while Apple, Microsoft, and LG Electronics have already filed for smart glass-related patent applications. Samsung in the meanwhile has already obtained patents from the American Patent Law Association and the Korean Intellectual Property Office in October last year.
The source also suggests that Samsung’s wearable will be available to buy right after its IFA unveiling. The famed Google Glass has also gone on sale for USD 1500 in the US from this week, readily available to the general public.
