(Updated with an email from the founder of SkoolShop, Mr. Satya Raghavan)
Do you believe if a company says its going on summer holidays for an uncertain period? Mumbai based eCommerce site, SkoolShop.com is currently doing the same as displayed by a banner on its website. So, is SkoolShop shutting down?
We tried logging into the site but were snapped with the same message as above. Also, each product page instead of showing the ‘Buy’ button is only showing an option of ‘Add to Wishlist’.
The portal offers all education related products including books, stationery, educational games, tablets, apps, etc, and has more than 25 categories listed with various sub-categories. It allows the users to shop by brand, category, class, benefit, personality, etc and is shipping products across India.
Since inception, the company has raised two rounds of investments. The first round was led in 2011 by Ex-Microsoft Executive, Jaspreet Bindra, who is now the CEO of Getit Infomedia and Rajan Anandan, who is currently the Managing Director of Google India.
The Series A round was led by Blume ventures and few angel investors including Sunil Kalra, Srikant Shastri, Vikas Choudhary and Puneet Deora.
We have written to the company founders and the team, however the response is still awaited. But is still worth giving a thought, that IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO SURVIVE IN THE ECOMMERCE WORLD? Everyday we read and hear about a lot of startups entering in eCommerce, especially in the online retail, but are they really making profits?
Around three months back, AllSchoolStuff, another eCommerce site in this category, was forced to scale down its operations due to lack of funds. Launched in 2011, within a year, the company has achieved the growth rate of 100% MoM, however, its now looking forward to a sell out.
Apart from AllSchoolStuff, IndiaPlaza, KoolKart, 21diamonds, Hutk, are some among the many which have suffered the same situation due to similar reasons.
Lets see what fate lies in for SkoolShop.com.

“The start of summer holidays is the best time for us to make changes, as parents are out on holidays and the current term has ended, and students go back to school only in June. Hence we are doing a series of changes in our technology stack as well as servers. We are testing the changes as we speak and should be back up in a few days.”
