A total of 5 million domain names have been added in last quarter of 2013, taking the total to 271 million, per Verisign Inc.’s recent Domain name industry brief. The number has increased by approximately 1.9 percent over the third quarter of 2013 while the registrations have grown by 18.5 million, or 7.3 percent, year over year.
Currently, there are about 2.5 billion global internet users. China leads with 614 million users followed by 254 million from US.
According to the report, the basic .com domains make up the majority of registered domain names with a total of 112 million, as of Dec 31, 2013. It is then followed by .net which equaled to 15.2 million names. New .com and .net registrations totaled 8.2 million during the fourth quarter of 2013, a 2 million more than the similar quarter last year.
