A snapshot of Yahoo’s year 2013

yahoo-logoThe year 2013, certainly will be counted among the most active years of Yahoo with CEO Marissa Mayer on board. Not only did company made 28 acquisitions, but also launched several new products as well as revamped experiences across its Search, Communications, Digital Magazines and Video services.

As revealed from a recent SEC filing, in 2013 company has invested USD 1 billion in product development as compared to USD 919 million in 2011 and USD 886 million in 2012. This included stock-based compensation expense of USD 81 million, USD 74 million, and USD 83 million, respectively.

The list of products included enhanced search and Yahoo mail, threaded conversations, new Yahoo finance, upgrade to Yahoo sports, Yahoo screen and much more.

Since October 2012, Yahoo has gained more than 150 million monthly mobile users leading to current 400 million monthly mobile users. Also, the mobile traffic represents more than half of company’s 800 million monthly users. These numbers do not include Internet Message Access Protocol (“IMAP”) or Tumblr users.

“Our growth in mobile traffic has been the result of an engaging and inspiring suite of new and revamped product experiences designed to make users’ daily habits mobile,” the firm said in the SEC filing.

Major acquisitions were done by keeping focus on increasing the mobile traffic, search capabilities, image & natural recognition abilities and video streaming services. Various innovations in its products to meet the needs of users, publishers and advertisers were also introduced.

** Although, the price has been mentioned USD 1.1 billion, but in its SEC filing Yahoo filed the total acquisition amount for Tumbler as USD 990 million. “On June 19, 2013, we completed the acquisition of Tumblr, Inc. (“Tumblr”). The total purchase price of approximately $990 million consisted mainly of cash consideration,” as mentioned in the filing.

Apart from these, it has also recently acquired Aviate (intelligent homescreen for the Android OS), Sparq, Cloud Party, Tomfoolery, Incredible Labs, Wander (a social diary platform) and Distill (technical recruiting).
