Microsoft to give free Windows Phone OS in India

For long, Microsoft has been struggling to get a stable presence in Indian markets amidst competition with iOS and Android OS. The company has now decided to give away the Windows OS for free to two of the Indian phone companies, i.e. Lava and Karbonn, reports TOI. For others, however, the license fees would be waived by Microsoft.

The decision was in line for long as revealed from previous reports. This includes preparing a free version of Windows 8.1 and agreement to acquire Nokia for launching android phones.

According to the recent Gartner report, Windows is far behind android OS in terms of worldwide device shipments.

The move although seems sensible, but it would significantly affect Microsoft’s business, as a large part of revenue came in via licensing fees. However, this could get supplemented with its online services such as Bing Search engine.
