CipherCloud, an initiative of IIT Bombay alumni, acquires SaaS application Security provider CloudUp Networks

CipherCloud, a California based cloud data protection solution provider, recently acquired CloudUp Networks, a privately held provider of SaaS application security. The transaction closed in early January. The financial terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.

CloudUp Networks, founded in 2013, is an initiative of Gaurav Kumar and Jon Shalowitz. The CloudUp technology has the capabilities to enhance an organization’s visibility into and compliance controls for data throughout its cloud lifecycle.

The deal will further broaden the CipherCloud’s capabilities to scan and tag different classes of data in order to protect sensitive organizational information. This is company’s first acquisition since its inception.

Launched in 2010, CipherCloud is an initiative of IIT Bombay alumni, Pravin Kothari. The company’s information protection technology protects sensitive information in real time, before it is sent to the cloud, while preserving application usability and functionality.

Additionally, CipherCloud Connect AnyApp and Database Gateway enable organizations to extend data protection to hundreds of third-party cloud and private cloud applications and databases.

In 2012, it raised USD 30 Mn in 2012 and an undisclosed amount in 2011 in a venture funding round. The investors included Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures and T-Venture.

The company currently claims to have over 1.2 million business users, more than 100 million customer records, over 10 industries. The client base spreads around the globe, including North America, Europe, Middle East, Australia/New Zealand and the rest of the Asia-Pacific.

CipherCloud’s client portfolio includes brands such as Salesforce,, Chatter, Box, Google Gmail, Microsoft Office 365, and Amazon Web Services.
