Android phones will exceed 2.5 Bn units in 2014 :Gartner

GartnerGartner predicts that the devices sold with Android operating system, including PC, tablets, ultra mobiles and mobile phones, will exceed 2.5 Bn units in 2014, which is a 7.6% increase from 2013. Along with that it also reveals that Android users will hit 1 Bn mark across all devices this year and 75% of Android volumes will come from emerging markets by 2017.

It forecasts that 1.9 Bn mobile phones will be shipped in 2014,a 5% increase from 2013. Ultra mobiles i.e. tablets, hybrid and clamshells, will have a growth rate of 54% in device markets from 2014.

As tablet is a smaller device and is easy to carry anywhere, that’s why in 2014 tablet market is forecasted to grow 47%, with lower average selling prices to attract more users. A study, in third quarter of 2013, across different countries, including Brazil, China, Germany, UK, and Japan, concludes that two-third of the tablets were used for outside the home activities.

Also, the estimations say that there has been a 7% drop over last year to 278 Mn units in use of traditional PCs from 2013. After a decline of 9.9% in 2013, PC market is estimated to remain flat in 2014. Also, the survey depicts that 8% of laptop users are replacing laptops by tablets.

Android mobile operating system’s expansion had slowed down between 2012 and 2013.

Annette Zimmerman, principal analyst at Gartner says, “There is no doubt that there is a volume versus value equation, with Android users also purchasing lower-cost devices compared to Apple users”. In operating system market, Android dominates over other operating systems and holds the largest number of installed based devices, with 1.9 Bn in use in 2014, compared with 682 Mn iOS/Mac OS installed base devices.
