Startups and ideas that raised funding in the past week

The week (Dec. 8-Dec. 13) was marked with some very prominent and high value fundings, which attracted a significant attention from masses. The major segments which drive funding in this week include big data Analytics, online travel, bitcoin and internet retail. Here is a brief overview:

Oculus VR oculus-vr

The CA, USA based startup is a developer of Oculus rift, a virtual reality headset for immersive gaming. It raised USD 75 Mn in Series B round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Spark Capital, Matrix Partners and Formation|8. Previously it raised USd 16 Mn in Series A and USd 2.4 Mn through product crowdfunding.

Ooyala ooyla

A big data startup which help organizations to build more engaged audiences and monetize video with more personalized and interactive video experiences. It raised USD 43 Mn from Australian telecom service provider Telstra. The funding brings the total amount raised to more than $120 million.

Talend talend

It is an open source data integration company, which raised USD 40 Mn from Bpifrance and Iris Capital with participation from existing investor Silver Lake Sumeru. In total, Talend has now raised $101.6 million.


A business class online solution simplifying the management of traditional file servers tape backups, FTP and VPN systems. It raised USD 29.5 Mn in Series D round of funding. The investors include Seagate, CenturyLink, Northgate Capital, and prior investors Kleiner Perkins, Google Ventures and Polaris Partners.


Founded in June of 2012 and incubated by Y Combinator last year, Coinbase is a bitcoin wallet and platform where merchants and consumers can transact with the new digital currency bitcoin. It raised USd 25 Mn in a Series B round led by Andreessen Horowitz along with existing investors Union Square Ventures and Ribbit Capital. The round brings the total raised by Coinbase up to $31 million.


An online gift card marketplace, raises USD 18.1 Mn, as disclosed in its recent SEC filing. Based out of Chicago, the company made its debut this year only with Lon Chow of Apex Venture Partners being a prior investor.

Practice Fusionpractice-fusion

It provides a free, web-based EMR system to physicians. It raised USD 15 Mn in an extended Series D round thereby bringing the total investment to USD 85 Mn in the latest round. Till date, the total funding has been around USD 140 Mn.


The startup raised USd 11.6 Mn in a round having a mix of both debt and equity, from more than 20 investors including Ed Ojdana, 3G Capital, Grind Games, and Silicon Valley Bank.


It is a Beijing based mobile game publisher, launched in october 2012. The startup has attracted USd 11 Mn in second round of funding led by GGV Capital. Including the current round of funding, the company has raised a total of USd 18 Mn.


A december 2013 startup, Loop is a mCommerce platform provider with a mobile wallet solution. It raised USD 10 Mn in series a round led by undisclosed investors.


It raised USD 6 Mn in an investment round led by European firm DN Capital. The company is basically a marketing startup and is based in London.

Oktogo, a hotel-booking site in Russia acquired the a few months back and is now rebranding itself under its name. The firm raised USD 5 Mn with an aim to be a one stop travel portal, in an  investment round led by VEB Innovations.


A San Francisco based gaming startup, it raised USD 5 Mn in funding led by TransLink Capital along with many other Silicon Valley investors. Founded in 2011, the company aims at creating fun console-quality multiplayer games for both the web and mobile platforms.


It is a location based social app which highlights interesting people nearby by syncing the GPS and Facebook information of the user together. The startup raised USD 4 Mn in Series A round led by DFJ, with participation from existing investors Benchmark and Crunchfund, along with new investors such as Greycroft, Semil Shah, and Dave Morin’s Slow Ventures.

The Zebra the-zebra

An online car insurance comparison portal, Zebra raised USD 4.5 Mn seed round from Simon Nixon, founder of the U.K.-based, and existing investors. The startup was launched in january last year and is based in Austin, Texas.

Shop Hersshop-hear

An online marketplace for luxury goods and apparels, Shop Hers raised USD 3.5 Mn in funding round led by Floodgate along with many other investors. The startup had previously raised a seed round from Fisher, Hirshland, Brian Lee, SV Angel, Jeremy Zimmer, Paige Craig and Ryan Steelberg.


A technology start up building a sensor-based analytics and engagement platform, Estimote raised USD 3.1 Mn seed round. The investors include Innovation Endeavors, Betaworks, Bessemer Venture Partners and others.


Founded in 2007, Bitstrips is a social comic creation app, wherein the users in the past two months alone have created around 30 Mn avatars on the service. It has raised USD 3 Mn in Series A funding round led by Li Ka-shing’s Horizons Ventures. The startup is currently headquartered in Toronto.


A two year old startup, Anturis is a cloud based monitoring platform. In order to grow its monitoring services in Us, it raised USD 2 Mn in Series A round. The investment was led by Runa Capital and VEB Innovations.

Petsy pesty

Based out of Mexico, Petsy is a ‘premier petcare e-commerce retailer’, launched recently in June this year. The company raised USD 1 Mn in a round led by Venture Partners, with participation from Capital Invest, and Dila Capital, as well as unnamed angel investors.
