Internet Users in India cross 200 Mn mark in Oct 2013 : IAMAI

According to a report released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, the number of Internet Users in India reached 205 Mn in October this year. Compared to 137 Mn in June 2012, this number marks a Y-o-Y growth of approximately 40 per cent.

The report also cites that by June next year this number will grow by 18.53%, to cross 243 Mn users. This will make India the second largest Internet base in the world, placing it above the US in terms of active Internet users. China is currently the largest Internet base in the world with 300 Mn internet users, followed by US with 207 Mn users.

India: Rural vs Urban

Out of the 205 Mn internet users in India in Oct 2013, 137 Mn belonged to urban India and the rest to rural India, as per the report. This number is expected to rise to 141 Mn for urban India and 72 Mn for rural India by Dec 2013. According to the report, rural India has seen a 58 percent Y-o-Y growth in terms of active Internet users, from 38 Mn in June 2012 to 60 Mn in June 2013.

Impact of mobile

A large part of this growth can be attributed to an increasing number of mobile Internet users, with 110 Mn mobile Internet users in October. This number is further expected to rise to 130 Mn by the end of December. Out of this IAMAI estimates that 103 Mn users will be from urban India and 27 Mn from rural India.

Internet Usage: Rural vs Urban

According to the report, 50% of the urban Internet users access Internet daily out of which 15% access it several times a day, while 20% do it about once a day. This high frequency of usage is not restricted to only the youth and the working population but extends to other demographic segments including the elderly and non-working women. Around 10% users access Internet once a week, while 4% do it 2-3 times a month and 3% access it less than once a month.

Among the rural Internet users, the report estimates 70% to access Internet on their mobile devices as well as through other means, while for 32% the main point of mobile access is mobile only. 18% of users access Internet only through their homes while 26% use home as one of various channels to access the net. Community service centers and cyber cafes act as the primary point of access for 40% of rural users.

In another report released by IAMAI this quarter, Mumbai emerged as the city with the highest number of Internet users in India with over 12 Mn users, followed by Delhi with 8.1 Mn users and Hyderabad with 4.7 Mn users.

“The Internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 Mn to 100 Mn and only 3 years from 100 to 200 Mn. From here on, we can hope to develop a robust Internet ecosystem with a multitude of local and global players and a thriving Internet economy”, said Mr. Rajan Anandan, Chairman of IAMAI.
