The first camera phone was sold in the year 2000, and now there are just a handful of phones which don’t have a camera. Now when everyone has a camera phone, people want to do more with their pictures, editing, doodling, enhancing, sharing etc. And by looking at the overwhelming number of photography app downloads, it is clear that there is a lot of trial and search happening to find the right app for tuning the photos. So we decided to sit down and scout for the good apps in the messy overloaded app stores. You can install just one or even all 5, you won’t be disappointed.
1. Adobe Photoshop Touch
This app is for serious photo editing. It has all the highly used features of Adobe Photoshop’s desktop version, so that you can do all your editing on the go. And even if you don’t use the actual Photoshop, the app is really easy to use and even has pre-defined filters.
The app supports features such as layers, selection tools, adjustments and filters. High resolution images could be easily edited while maintaining the quality. It is paid like its parent app, costing INR 270 (USD 4.99) on both Apple and Android app stores. But it comes with a free membership to Creative Cloud provides 2GB of cloud storage.
2. Pixlr Express
Pixlr Express is a cross between professional and casual photo editing apps. It is already one of the most downloaded apps for tweaking photos. It’s an all in one app with features like basic tuning, collage making, photo splash, doodling, face enhancing and more.
It has an easy to use interface, and is pretty smooth. It doesn’t support direct sharing of photos with your friends though, which could be a turn off for some. But installing it is certainly better than downloading half a dozen apps for each function. So, install it for free on iOS and Android phones.
This one is to add filters and effects to your images, and then sharing it with your friends. Yes it does sound similar to Instagram, but what caught our eye was its one particular feature, you can add voice to your images. While clicking pictures, you could record over, like an audio caption for images.
You can click pictures directly from the app, apply filters, create your own customized filters and then share it with your friends or people around the world. This same feature is also a little hasslesome though, as it asks you to log in to use the app. It is still a good alternative, if you’re not so fond of Instagram. It is free of cost on both PlayStore and Apple appstore.
4. Sketch Guru
The app isn’t as risible as its name, but yes it does do what the name suggests. It actually makes pretty good sketches of your photos. It supports 13 kinds of effects including: Gouache, PencilSketch, ColorPencil, WaterColor and Comic. Although the app is more for entertainment editing, it could actually be used to make some good artworks.
Either load a picture or click one, select the effect you like and the app will give you a plausible result. However in most of the cases the processing time was longer than such photo editing apps usually take. Otherwise, it is a good install for both Android and iOS phones.
5. Fixie GIF Camera
This is one fun app that lets you share moments creatively. Its an easy to use short GIF images creator, which you can then customize before sharing with your friends.
Each animated GIF is about 1.5 seconds (which we think could’ve been a little longer), you can doodle, add frames and then even share your work directly through Whatsapp, Line and whichever possible platform you could think of. Fixie is just for Android currently, but it’ll soon be available for iPhone users too.
