According to a recently published report by TechSci Research ‘India Tablet PC Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2018’, the tablet market in India is set to generate USD 2 Bn in revenue by the end of 2013. Also the revenues are expected to grow at the CAGR of 33% by 2018.
The report also says that the market for tablet PCs across the service industry and SME’s is set to rise radically. There’s an increasing demand for Tablet PCs in the education sector as well, for instance the government’s initiative to provide Aakash tablets to students at a really low price across 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in an e-learning program. Manufacturer of Aakash tablets Datawind, and other companies like HCL and Micromax are focussing on developing affordable tablets for this area.
Tablets were initially made popular by the introduction of the iPad by Apple in 2010. And currently Samsung is another global player in the tablet market. However, as per the report, even though these international brands are selling tablet PCs in India, the major players operating in the market include the domestic manufacturers Micromax, Karbonn and Lava.
The rise in demand for this market could be attributed to reasons such as increasing demand for portable devices, rising disposable income, large and young population base etc. According to an another report, which was by Avendus, tablet penetration in India is slowly rising. With 3 Mn units sold in India in 2012, the number is expected to grow to 6 Mn this year.
In September this year there was a news that the Indian government will distribute mobile and tablets to the rural population for free, in order to bridge the digital gap in the country.
“The increasing applications market, growing mobile penetration, increased proliferation of Wi-Fi and development of mobile broadband networks such as 3G & 4G have made Tablet PCs most suitable contender for communication, computing, entertainment and internet access.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research.
