In order to utilise and harness the benefits of Cloud Computing, the Indian government in a major move has launched an important initiative – “GI Cloud” which has been coined as ‘Meghraj’. Task Force was constituted by Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeiTY) with a focus to bring out the strategic direction and implementation roadmap of GI Cloud, leveraging the existing or new infrastructure.
Meghraj, the National cloud initiative, aims to accelerate delivery of e-services provided by the government and to optimise ICT spending of the government. In the first phase of implementation, National Informatics Centre (NIC) cloud service will be launched in Delhi by early December.
According to a Nasscom report, this initiative will create a big role for cloud service providers including private or public players, who will be engaged by the government to set up dedicated government clouds based on the guidelines set by GI Cloud.
As explained by Renu Budhiraja, Sr Director & HOD State Data Centers, Department of Electronics & IT (DeitY), The GI Cloud will be equipped to provide cloud services, i.e. IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. “Formulation of the GI Cloud Strategy and adoption roadmap are one of the primary steps that will facilitate large scale adoption of cloud by government”, said Renu.
Also, private players will additionally be allowed to host cloud-based apps on the eGov AppStore which will be the common platform to host and run applications (developed by government agencies or private players) in national clouds. The pilot launch was held on 31st May 2013 by MOC&IT with 20 applications (apps.gov.in).
According to Shri Satyanarayana, Secretary DeiTY (Ministry of Communications & Information Technology), Cloud is culturally suitable for India as there is a preference for shared infrastructure and service, penchant for recycling & reuse and less concerns over piracy of data. “Government of India has developed the first Data Center for public cloud through National Informatics Centre (NIC) and an App store where citizens can access more than 40 services”, he added.
