Whisper, launched in late 2012, is a secret sharing mobile app which allows users to add text to images and share them anonymously. An initiative of Michael Heyward and Brad Brooks, the app aims at providing a platform where users can express their true self within a community of honesty & acceptance.
Users either upload their own photos to Whisper or search via the app for those that exist on the Internet, and afterward can overlay text on top of them. With Whisper one can connect with other people who think & feel the same way and have a same perspective for things. The photos can be published to a real-time stream for instant social interaction and can also be shared on other social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Tumblr. The app also has a private messaging feature that users can avail for $5.99 a month.
To maintain the anonymity of the posts, whisper do not create any user profiles. However, A user can message the creator of any post, and if someone posts again, it’s under a totally different anonymous handle. Also, to ensure the safety of the users, Whisper employs a team of 55 moderators in the Philippines that filters each post and bans inappropriate content.
The company has also set up a non profit startup, Your Voice dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues on college campuses. It provides resources for college students who struggle with issues like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sexuality, and managing stress.
Currently, with around 2.5 billion page views per month and an average daily user visits for 30 minutes, it is a much sought app among the youth in the 18-24 year age bracket.
