Online recharge website, Freecharge.in has now appointed Alok Goel, ex-Chief Operating Officer, redBus as the new CEO. This is rare move that Indian startups have witnessed where existing CEO steps aside to bring another CEO on the board.
As per reports, Kunal Shah, the founder and the former CEO of Freecharge will continue to have a strategic role in the company and will focus on growth of the merchant network.
Freecharge wanted to bring expert who had experience in scaling up businesses globally. “By giving Alok the driver’s seat I am ensuring the probability of the company’s success at a greater level,” said Kunal Shah.
Alok Goel, who had previously worked at Google and played a different role at redBus as Chief Product Officer and later as Chief Operating Officer, had recently moved out of redBus after it was acquired by Ibibo Group two months back. Though Goel denied that his exit from redBus has nothing to with the acquisition, “This will truly be a partnership between me and Kunal and that is the biggest reason for joining,” said Alok.
As per the company, Freecharge currently has around 3.5 million customers, and will focus on growth of the merchant network.
Freecharge was founded 2010 by Kunal Shah with Sandeep Tandon and in 2012 it had raised INR 20 crore in funding led by Sequoia Capital.
