Online marketplace, Flipkart which had launched its eBooks category last year in November has now added three more apps for its users. Now eBooks can be downloaded and read through iOS and Windows Phone apps on Windows Store as well as on a browser through a Web Reader.
Flipkart’s eBook were already available on the Android app.
Flipkart started as an online book retailer back in 2007, has now established itself well in the physical books market online and according to the company, Flipkart accounts for 40-45% out of the total share of organized books market in India.
Adding more platforms to access eBooks can be seen as its strategy to extend its expertise and experience to the digital format. With this the company aims to provide seamless content, regardless of platforms, and considers it as its strategy to further strengthen its position and expansion in the digital space.
The app has been developed using FlipStream technology, which helps to speed up the reading experience across apps, allowing the reader to access any section of the eBook instantaneously. The app will also provide users with recommendations based on their reading habits. There is also a personalization feature where users can control the reading mode (day, night and sepia), font size, orientation (landscape/portrait) etc, and one can even highlight the text, take notes, bookmark pages and even refer to a dictionary while reading.
There are FlipSync & FlipThru features as well. FlipSync allows to automatically sync the last read location, highlights, notes and bookmarks across every device ever used by the users. Whereas with FlipThru one gets to read 10% of the eBook even before buying it.
Flipkart has also revamped its existing Android app with several usability improvements within the reader including its speed and a powerful storefront.
It already have 2.5 lakh titles on the site and it aim to increase this number to 10 lakhs by year-end. The company is also working to build a collection of regional titles and is expected to add up Marathi and Bengali titles as well in the next quarter.
Flipkart has also partnered with Nokia to pre-install its app in the upcoming Nokia Lumia devices. Also, as a part of the launch well-known authors like Khushwant Singh and Sidin Vadukut have written exclusive pieces that will only be available on Flipkart eBooks that are a part of the Nokia bundle.
Flipkart was launched back in 2007, and has launched its marketplace model this year and has recently raised USD 200mn in funding from Tiger Global, Naspers, Accel Partners and other existing investors.
