Applicants will now be able to apply for passports via mobile devices. The Ministry of External Affairs, responsible for issuing passports has launched its mobile app mPassport earlier this year – in an effort to further enhance the citizen experience and help people access basic Passport-related procedures and services anytime anywhere.
Available to download at www.passportindia.gov.in, or from Google Play Store, the application at the moment offers a variety of services including passport application status, tracking, locating the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and other information including the required documents, fees and steps involved in obtaining a passport. The application is designed with a simple UI, making it easy to use for anyone.
In its new development the ministry has decided to take a step further and help people to go through the entire process of passport application, from application to track it via smartphones.
However, the feature will be added in next few months time. The application will also enable users to make online payments using their credit/debit cards.
Once the process is completed and the payment has been accepted, all they have to do is go to the nearest PSK office and collect the allotted application reference number.
In 2012, the Ministry rendered a record number of 73.89 lakh Passport services, registering almost a threefold increase since 2000.
