TripAdvisor, a leading US based online travel advice and booking site have recently announced to acquire GateGuru, the first door-to-door solution for travelers giving real time information about flights and airports around the world on the mobile device and easing the ‘day-of travel’ experience. Terms of acquisition are still undisclosed.
TripAdvisor, with more than 200 million unique monthly visitors aims at taking advantage of the GateGuru’s mix of user-generated content and information to complement its existing flight products such as SeatGuru.
The GateGuru team will continue to operate out of New York City, and report to Bryan Saltzburg, General Manager New Initiatives and leader of the TripAdvisor Flights product and SeatGuru brand.
Launched in 2009, New York based GateGuru app offers detailed maps and insights on stores, restaurants, amenities and gate locations, combined with weather forecasts, estimated security wait times and real-time flight status information. GateGuru is backed by top-tier angel investors including Chamath Palihapitiya, Allen Morgan, Tom Glocer and BHV.
With an advertising based business model, TripAdvisor is also present in India. It features reviews and advice on hotels, resorts, flights, restaurants, holiday packages, travel guides, etc. Last year TripAdvisor launched a creative advertising challenge for brands and agencies with total prize fund of $1.5 million in India.
TripAdvisor also acquired Jetsetter from US based Gilt Groupe recently.
