Homeshop18, a leading player in the ecommerce space will now be adding food items to its product range which currently includes apparels, home decor, mobile phones and many more categories.
With this addition, Homeshop18 will become the only etailer catering to the food and groceries need on a national level for the online consumers. Initially, the company will be launching the new product category with Olive oil, drink concentrates and mocktail syrups. In the coming months, the virtual retailer plans to widen this range by adding ready-to-eat items and many more food products for its customers.
As per Sundeep Malhotra, Founder and CEO Homeshop18, the food category is being seen as a mainstream category and they aim to capitalize on the growing market.
The other players in the online food and groceries segment include Bigbasket, Mygrahak, Infibeam, Grocbay, Zopnow, etc. However, they all provide services only in selected cities across the country.
With faster delivery expectations in grocery and need of better supply chain and storage has restricted several players to go for a quick expansion across the country and start with focus on specific pin codes.
HomeShope18 too, with its serviceable reach to a great extent in India, may find it tricky to deal within this category.
The opportunity and challenge of delivering grocery online can be reinstated from the fact that Amazon Inc. has launched a grocery range in US market but only after so many years of operations, but India being an altogether different market, if an online retailer needs to be able to meet the expectations for pan India grocery demand, it will really need some innovations at the supply chain backend.
