BSNL to offer cloud computing services

Govt owned telecommunication services provider BSNL has announced to offer cloud computing services in the country in partnership with NTT-owned Japanese firm Dimension Data to offer Cloud based services.

Based on Dimension Data’s Managed cloud Platform, BSNL will offer enterprise cloud services such as Managed Colocation, Managed Hosting through Internet data centers, operated and managed by Dimension Data for BSNL. For building these data centres Dimension Data has invested INR 200 crore for setting six locations in the country including Mumbai, Faridabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ludhiana and Ghaziabad. These will be India’s first uptime Institute certified Tier III level data centres and are designed to be fully redundant with no single point of failure.

Infrastructure as a service  (IAAS) is the booming sector in India when it comes to Indian Cloud landscape as per a report by Gartner. Though SaaS services still dominate the sector , but IAAS which showed the growth of 22.7% with $43.1 million in 2012 is expected  to reach $60 million, with a growth of 39.6%. The joint venture will help BSNL to increase its reach and business in the growing market.

In India, the increasing commitment of government towards healthcare, education, banking, rural development and other e-governance is expected to drive significant adoption of cloud computing across the country. BSNL’s IDCs will enhance its service portfolio to meet the communications and IT needs of large medium as well as small business enterprises in India.

The launch of  IDCs, will help BSNL to offer secure hosted services and cloud services to support various government initiatives as well as to our enterprise clients. Joint enterprise of BSNL and Dimension has signed agreements with 12 organisations for providing cloud computing services which include Indian Railways IT arm CRIS, EXL Services, Federal Bank, Genpact India, Hindustan Times, India Today, KPIT Cummins, State Bank of India, Sapient  Corporation and Agra’s BR Ambedkar University . “It gives us immense pleasure in playing a vital role in BSNL’s IDC and cloud initiative” said  Kiran Bhagwanani, Chief Executive Officer, Dimension Data India Ltd.

BSNL which has approx 15% of market share with 97.1 million mobile subscribers aims to strengthen its network by adding 15 million lines more.
