Zomato expands to South Africa

Zomato, the online lifestyle and restaurant guide, recently launched its services in South Africa starting with Johannesburg as its first location. The section will provide information for around 2000+ restaurant, bars, pubs and other establishments and will be available both at Zomato web portal and mobile app.

Founded by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah in July 2008 for restaurants in New Delhi, Zomato currently covers 94000 restaurants in 20 cities in 6 countries which covers UAE, UK, Qatar, the Philippines and Sri Lanka apart from India.

Zomato recently raised Series D of $10 mn in March 2013 from Infoedge. Previous funding round includes Series C ($2.5 mn), Series B ($3.5 mn), Series A of $1 mn in Aug 2010. After the four rounds of investment, Info Edge now owns a majority stake in Zomato at 57.9%. The total funding stands at $16.5M.

Though, Zomato is still working on its revenue strategy, it is surely on a global expansion spree by increasing the user base and traffic. Hopefully a nice strategy for an exit and breaking the jinx for Internet Startup Ecosystem in India.
