World has 250+ Million Domains now; Big Data worries gets bigger

According to Verisign’s latest Domain Name Industry Brief, more than 6 million domain names were registered in the fourth quarter of 2012, bringing the total to 252 million worldwide.

The basic .com domains make up the majority of registered domain names. By the end of December users had registered 106.2 million .com domains, as well as 14.9 million .net addresses. The .com and .net top-level domains (TLDs) also accounted for the majority of newly registered domain names. In total, 8 million .com and .net TLDs were registered during the fourth quarter of 2012, up slightly from the 7.9 million that were registered in the year-ago quarter.

As the global leader in domain names, Verisign provides this briefing to highlight important trends in domain name registration, including key performance indicators and growth opportunities, to industry analysts, media and businesses.

“BIG DATA AGE” Begins

The Verisign report highlights that the global Big Data market was worth USD $6.3 billion in 2012 and is expected to reach USD $48.3 billion by 2018, at a compound annual growth rate of 40.5 percent from 2012 to 2018.

“human beings now generate more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day, and that 90 percent of the world’s total data has been generated in the past two years.”

At its core, the term “Big Data” refers to a phenomenon that should be instantly familiar to organizations of all sizes: The ability to collect and store highly relevant, mission-critical data is far outpacing the ability to effectively process, analyze and leverage it to make informed business decisions, which is exactly the the most pressing need for companies in the Big Data Age.

Registering a domain name

The only way to register and start using a domain name is to use the services of a domain name registrar. The domain name industry is regulated and overseen by ICANN, the organization that is responsible for certifying companies as domain name registrars. At one time there was only one domain name registrar – Network Solutions, Inc. – but today there are dozens of accredited registrars.

Cost

The registrar you choose will determine the cost for registering a domain name, but in general expect to pay a yearly fee. Some registrars will offer discounts if you register for more than one year, but no registrar has the authority to sell more than a 10-year registration contract for any domain name. The registrar will ask you to provide some contact and technical information to have on record. This information is stored in a registry, which other computers can access to find information on your site.

The domain you use for a your web site can have a huge impact in the way that humans and search engine spiders perceive it.Domain names were once so expensive that only those wanting to protect a brand or who could afford them owned them, now they are commonplace and if you know where to look, you could pick up a domain name for free.If you want to create a domain name and are not sure if it has already been taken, you can check a whois server that keeps track of all the registered domain names.
