RTI applications can now be filed online for greater transparency

Department of Personnel and Training, in a step towards providing greater transparency, has announced setting up of a unique facility for submitting RTI applications and fees online through

The website which was launched earlier this week is the step taken by the government with the aim to help people exercise their right to seek information through online medium. It will provide individual greater and easier access to government information. Currently it is available for ONLY for Department of Personnel & Training (DOPT).

The RTI can filed by Indian citizens only for the main ministries or departments of central government, located in New Delhi. one can submit a fee of INR 10 through Internet banking by SBI (or associated banks) or by credit-debit cards.

“At present, people can file online applications and appeals for information related to the DoPT only. They can also make payment of RTI fee using this platform,” said, DoPT official.

At present, the text of an application that can be uploaded can only be upto 500 words and in case an application contains more than 500 words, then attachment can be uploaded along. An applicant will also get alert on his or her mobile about movement of the applications. The website will also allow an RTI applicant and appellant to check the status of his application and appeal.

Last month, centre had also started an online facility Electronic Indian Postal Order (eIPO) for the Non-Residential Indians to pay fee of Rs. 10 to access their Right to Information from abroad.
