Facebook which started its gift feature last year in September by acquiring the gift application Karma in May 2012 has rolled out the feature for users in India also, Facebook users in India now can use this feature to send gifts to friends residing in US.

Facebook Gifts were launched to make ecommerce more convenient for the users, it turns user data into suggestions for gifts to buy right from where they spend time even without a friend’s address thus solving a major problem of  giving gift  without  knowing the shipping address of the recipient.

Users can click on their profile and select the ‘Give a gift’ option from their cover page, one cab even access to the gifting feature by going to After a user chooses a gift, the recipient is notified and recipient can indicate where the gift should be sent. The recipient also has the option to swap the gift for another of equal or lesser value. Facebook will collect the credit card details of members and then allow both the sender and the receiver to track the progress of the delivery.

The button builds on the social network’s practice of suggesting you give a gift to a friend on his or her birthday and is part of the company’s ongoing effort to make some money. The social network partnered with companies like Starbucks and Target to sell their products. Facebook earns a percentage of sales when someone uses it to buy physical products or digital gift cards for their birthdays, weddings, or other special occasions.

One can choose from wide variety of category including Gift Cards & Digital, Food Wine, Apartment & Bar, Beauty and Grooming, Style, Flowers & Gift Baskets, Baby, etc ranging from $5 to $100. Some early partners include Magnolia Bakery, Starbucks, Uber, Warby Parker and Rovio, etc. Payments can only be made by credit cards.
