E-Commerce Leaders working behind the scenes

There are some key figures that have been instrumental in the development of the ecommerce sector. Typically the CEO is the face and name of a company, but there are many other important people that help take their companies and the sector forward but are seldom visible on the forefront. These are some of the e commerce leaders that work behind the scenes yet help build an empire.

Amarinder Dhaliwal – Done by None

Amarinder is currently one of the co-founders of Intuitent Online. Along with two other co founders, he is instrumental in launching online brand Done by None. Launched in 2012, Done by one is a web exclusive fashion brand that claims to offer unique and trendy yet affordable fashion to the urban young woman.

He has spearheaded ventures across industries including e-commerce, online & print media, investment banking and infrastructure. With more than 15 years of experience behind him, Amarinder was previously with Times Internet Ltd as VP Ecommerce – Zigwheels, various significant positions at Times Group, as Financial Analyst  at Powergen and at SBI Capital Markets as Dy Manager. Amarider holds degrees from IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad.

Binny Bansal – Flipkart

Binny is the co-founder and current COO at Flipkart. Flipkart is an Indian e-retailer and now online marketplace headquartered in Bangalore, and was founded in 2007.

Along with co founder Sachin Bansal, he got recognised for the Ernst & Young Best Entrepreneur award in 2010. They also ranked 26th on Forbes’ 40 Under 40 list in 2012.

Binny has more than 5 years worth of experience, having previously worked with Sarnoff and Amazon as a Software Engineer. He is an alumni of IIT Delhi with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

Darpan Munjal – Fashionara

Darpan is the Co Founder of the online retailers Fashionara. Fashionara.com describes themselves as an e-fashion company that offers a range of merchandise and diferent brands in the fashion and lifestyle category. It was started in November 2011.

Prior to Fashionara, Darpan has worked with CMC Ltd. and Xpedior in consulting positions. At Sears Holdings Corp(Divisional VP, IT eCom) and Times Internet Ltd(CTO eCom) he focused on transforming technology platforms and led technology and product management teams. At LeapMatrix Inc. and Kaplan Higher Education he was in position as the President and CTO respectively.

With an MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Darpan has more than a year of experience in his own startup company Fashionara and almost two decades of experience in the business and ecommerce industry.

Ganesh Subramanian – Myntra

Currently working with Myntra Designs Pvt Ltd on myntra.com an online retailer of lifestyle and fashion products as their Chief Merchandising Officer, Ganesh works on improving and developing the fashion category at Myntra. He focuses on developing merchandise that generates profitability along with being liked.

He previously worked with Coats Viyella India, Morarjee Brembana Ltd. and Indus League Clothing Ltd. In his tenure with Arvind Brands, he helped convert Excalibur from a trade driven to a retail brand. He was part of the startup team that helped launch the Tommy Hilfiger Range in India for the first time. As Assistant Vice President in Buying and Merchandising with Reliance Retail and as Vice President & General Merchandising Manager with Bharti Walmart, Ganesh made contributions to fashion, footwear, baby needs (solutions), jewellery and accessories platforms in India across all retail formats.

With expertise in apparel, strategising, merchandising and retail and over two decades of experience in the retail industry, Ganesh brings a vast amount knowledge to the sector.

Gautam Sinha – Indiatimes Group

Gautam Sinha was earlier Director Technology and is now COO in Times Group, Times Internet Ltd. In this capacity, he leads and drives the technology strategy, vision and execution for the entire internet, mobile and telecommunication properties of the group including timesofindia.com, economictimes.com, indiatimes.com, timesjobs.com, magicbricks.com, simplymarry.com etc.

Gautam has been awarded numerous US patents for his work done in telecommunication and financial services. His expertise includes highly secure and scalable enterprise software architectures, artificial intelligence and call centre solutions.

Prior to this, Gautam was the COO/CTO of CashEdge Inc. He also held senior management positions at Sevant, Aspect Communications, at the Neural Applications Corporation, and at the Ministry of Defence in India (DRDO). With an MS and BS in Computer Science, Gautam has over 24 years of knowledge in fields of technology innovation and execution.

Hari Trivedi – Naaptol

Business Analyst (Virtual Commerce) and major shareholder at Naaptol online retail Pvt. Ltd; Hari Trivedi is an important name in the industry. Launched in January 2008, Naaptol is an Indian comparison based social shopping portal.

A pioneer of the Direct to Reader’s Offers introduced in 2005 in India, he is responsible for the international concept of discounts and offers in the print and virtual medium becoming a booming industry in India.

Hari also consults in all areas of virtual commerce in the field of technology, supply chain management, call centre management, CRM, Vendor development and Merchandising, Media buying – both print and broadcast. Previous to this he was heading the e commerce sector at the national level at Indiatmes.com with Times Internet Ltd.

Rahul Narvekar – FashionandYou

Rahul was the co founder and the Director of Brand Sourcing at FashionandYou. FashionandYou describes itself as an Indian online private shopping club. 

Rahul has a decade long experience in the retail industry and has held positions previously in ANSAL API as VP, Suncity Projects as Retail Head, and Senior GM at DLF Retail Developers Ltd. He has an educational background in Global management and Strategy from IIM Calcutta and degrees in GMP luxury brand management from ESSEC Business School and one from IIM Ahmedabad.

 

Raman Gulati – HomeShop18

Director of Operations and founding member of the team that launched the HomeShop 18, Raman Gulati is a significant person in the world of early e-commerce.  HomeShop18 is an online and on-air retail marketing and distribution venture, one of India’s first 24-hour home shopping TV channel.

He and his team have built a company culture that focuses on the growth of its employees. With more than 19 years of experience in the industry, Raman has previously worked with the Times of India Group,Times Internet Ltd.
Rohit Bansal – Snapdeal

Rohit Bansal in known in the retail sector as the co-founder and COO of the online marketplace Snapdeal.com. Launched in 2010 with co-founder Kunal Bahl, Snapdeal started as a daily deal platform, but later expanded into product retailing across various categories and declared itself a marketplace.

Rohit continues to spearhead the expansion of Snapdeal’s vast merchant network across the country. He plays an instrumental role in Snapdeal’s continuous innovations in the technology-based marketing services space and overall corporate strategy.

Alumni of IIT Delhi with B. Tech and M. Tech degrees in Computer Science, Rohit has 6 years of experience behind Snapdeal.

Sanjay Sethi – Shopclues

Currently positioned as the Co Founder and VP Products with shopclues.com, Sanjay helps in providing and implementing the product vision and processes to create and efficiently run the marketplace format at ShopClues.com.

Before joining Shopclues, he was the Global Product Head for Shipping & Logistics, Payments & Billing at eBay, at its headquarter in Silicon Valley. Prior to eBay some of companies he worked with were TradeBeam, a global trade management startup based in San Francisco, Great America Insurance in Cincinnati, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Texas etc. Before moving to US, Sanjay worked for 5 years in India with HCL Perot Systems, IIS InfoTech & Steel Authority of India Limited.

Sanjay has over 18 years of experience in Internet Product Development including ecommerce Marketplaces, online payments & global trade logistics.He is a graduate in technology from IIT Delhi & Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University.
