Karnataka Leads in e-Commerce, Flipkart top searched website reveals Google Zeitgeist 2012

Recently Google India released annual Zeitgeist which revealed some unique facts about online penetration in India based on searches conducted in the country. In Karnataka e-commerce has emerged as the fastest rising category, Flipkart tops the top searched ecommerce websites and Makemytrip topped in top searched travel websites.

Like every year, this year also Zeitgeist offered a unique perspective on the major events and hottest trends, Google India announced its annual Zeitgeist, a look at 2012 through the collective eyes of our nation on the web.

In Karnataka E-commerce has emerged as the fastest rising category, Bangalore spends the highest amount of time online, searching for the best smartphones and tablets available in the Indian market. Internet users in the state has shown passion in moving towards shopping online in comparison to the searches in states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

As per the Google Trends, ‘online shopping’ was the most searched keyword in six states – including Tripura, Meghalaya, Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Pondicherry, and Orissa, cities that have fewer offline retail outlets in relation to the more metropolitan states. Bhubhaneswar and Vizag raced ahead of Bangalore to search for online shopping and related terms – ‘online shopping India’, ‘online mobile shopping’, and ‘shoe online shopping’.

“Google’s 2012 Zeitgeist reflects data from 1.2 trillion searches in 146 languages globally. With 137 million users, India is the world’s third largest internet market and is a good barometer of trends in Indian society as a whole.”, said Rajan Anandan, VP and Managing Director – Sales and Operations, Google India.

“With growing smartphone adoption, mobile searches continued to grow with over 70 million mobile internet users. We expect India’s next 150–180 million Internet users will access the Internet through their mobile devices. This means that the information that these users will look for will need to be more local and meaningful as already reflected in the kind of search trends we’re seeing in the country,” he added.

In India there is definitely a positive shift in the user’s perception on purchasing gadgets, books, accessories and more online.

Top searched Travel sites

An analysis of the top searched travel websites revealed that while railways, airline tickets, and hotel booking sites were an obvious trend, a bus booking portal – redbus.in ranked 3 in the list, making a new trend in how Indians prefer to travel.

Google reveals the internet “Zeitgeist” through an exploration of the over one trillion search queries that they receive each year. In addition to the Year-end Zeitgeist, which highlights the top trends of 2012. It also has several tools that give insights into global, regional, past and present search trends. Google Zeitgeist tools can never be used to identify individual users as they rely on anonymized, aggregated counts of how often certain search queries occur over time.
