Indian appetite for Mobile Internet grows as 56% of smartphone users in the country access the Internet multiple times a day

Indian mobile internet is growing and gradually turning into a golden hen as more and more cheap smartphones become common. As per a recent study conducted by Google India and IPSOS, around 94% Indian smartphone users have used their smart device to access Internet from their phone. The research shows the swing from feature phones to smartphones, the adoption of tablets and the rise of mobile internet access.

According to the findings, around 56% of smartphone users in the country access the Internet multiple times a day. An even larger percentage of India users almost 88 percent access the internet on mobile devices every. Almost 40% surf the Net at least once a day and about 76% of smartphone users in India access social networking sites on their devices compared to 54 per cent in the US.

In 2011, Indians bought more than 3 million smartphones, led by Nokia where as Worldwide Smartphone users stretch upt o 472 million Smartphone Units Bought in 2011. Smartphones sale are likely to reach 100 million by 2015. Almost 36 per cent of all smartphone owners in India are in 18-29 age group whereas 17 per cent are in the 30 to 49 age group. The data is based on the total number of smartphone users in the country.


Mobile phones are estimated as the future. “Mobile phones are the future. More smartphones and tablets are being shipped in India than desktops and laptops. In fact, about 40 percent of search queries for Google India comes from mobile phones as against U.S. (14 percent), UK (6 percent) and Russia (11 percent),” said Rajan Anandan, MD, Google India. E-commerce in India is growing rapidly with internet penetration. According  to ViziSense report, E- commerce market in India gain two- fold profit within a year’s time with a huge panel of 1,30,000 online users.  “67 per cent of e-commerce in India happens in mobile and consumer appliances,” added Anandan. The Google-Ipsos data also document that smartphone users continue to access the internet from their PCs as the market is becoming more fragmented.
